A Qualitative Leap in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Hearing and Speech Disorders: the Opening of the Ear, Nose and Throat Department

As part of the ongoing development plan at Aswan University Hospitals, and under the auspices of Prof. Loay Saad El-Din Nasrat, President of Aswan University; Prof. Mohamed Zaki El-Dashoury, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; and Prof. Ashraf Maabad, Executive Director of Aswan University Hospitals—and in the presence of Engineer Amr Lashin, Governor of Aswan—the university hospitals witnessed the inauguration of the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Department, headed by Prof. Essam Abu El-Magd.

 

The opening of this department represents a significant addition to the system of specialized medical services. It has been equipped in accordance with the latest international medical standards to provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services, keeping pace with global advancements in this vital specialty.

 

The department includes four inpatient rooms with a total capacity of 16 beds, in addition to a fully equipped examination room featuring state-of-the-art medical devices. These include an advanced surgical microscope, a flexible nasopharyngoscopy, and a complete endoscopic unit for nasal and sinus examinations, enabling highly accurate diagnosis of various conditions.

 

The department also houses a comprehensive audiology unit equipped with modern technologies, including an audiometer for precise assessment of hearing loss. An otoacoustic emissions (OAE) device is used to evaluate middle ear function, while a brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) device supports the diagnosis of hearing impairment, particularly in children.

 

In addition, the department provides specialized services in speech therapy and the treatment of voice disorders. A dedicated speech therapy unit offers advanced services, including:

-Examination and treatment of vocal cord disorders using specialized endoscopic techniques.
-Treatment of stuttering.
-Rehabilitation of children with speech delays.
-The department is further supported by state-of-the-art surgical facilities, including modern operating rooms equipped with advanced surgical microscopes.

For performing delicate procedures such as:
-Microscopic ear surgery.
-Tympanoplasty (eardrum repair).
-Skull base surgery.
-Nasal and sinus surgery.

Moreover, the department is equipped with ”COBLATION System ”—one of the latest medical technologies—serving as an advanced alternative to conventional surgical methods. It is used in procedures such as:
-Tonsillectomy
-Reduction of enlarged turbinate
-Removal of vocal cord polyps

 

These procedures are performed with high precision, helping to minimize pain and reduce recovery time. The department is staffed by a distinguished team of faculty members and their assistants, supported by a highly qualified nursing and technical team, ensuring the delivery of exceptional healthcare services in accordance with the highest standards of quality.

This development comes under the supervision of Prof. Essam Abu El-Magd, Head of the ENT Department, who leads a fully integrated system combining medical expertise with cutting-edge technology, while placing strong emphasis on comprehensive and compassionate patient care.

The inauguration of this department reflects the commitment of the administration of Aswan University Hospitals to continuously advancing medical services and adopting the latest technologies.
