Under the patronage of Prof. Ayman Mahmoud Othman, Acting President of Aswan University, and Prof. Mohamed Zaki El-Dahshouri, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and in the presence of Prof. Magdy Mohamed Ali, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, the Department of Vascular Surgery at Aswan Faculty of Medicine, headed by Dr. Mohamed Ismail, launched the World Vein Week activities today, Thursday, April 8, 2021, at the Tulip Hotel in Aswan, in coordination with the World Health Organization.

This occurred in the middle of the implementation of preventative measures for avoiding the new Corona virus, such as sterilization and temperature measurement of guests before entering the venue, as well as promoting mask use and social exchange among participants. Dr. Ahmed Khalaf, a lecturer at the Vascular Surgery Department, organized the conference.

Egypt, as the leading country in this field in Africa and the Arab world, was invited to participate in these events by the African Federation of Vascular Sciences and Surgery, and the founder and president of the Federation, Prof. Emad El-Din Hussein (based at Aswan University), Professor of Vascular Surgery at Ain Shams University, founder of the Egyptian Society for Vascular Sciences, and supervisor of the Department of Vascular Surgery at Aswan University.

During his speech, Dr. Emad discussed what happened during the World Week events, which began on Monday, April 5, 2021 and will go until Sunday, April 11. The activities began with heading to the streets of Aswan to raise awareness of vein illnesses among locals, where a volunteer group of prominent students from the Faculty of Medicine at Aswan University met with people of all ages and genders. He further stated that many presentations will be given throughout the day, followed by a discussion session to help attendees grasp the significance and dangers of vein disorders.

Dr. El- Dahshoury , Dean of the Faculty, praised the activities of the Vascular Surgery Department at Aswan Faculty of Medicine and its doctors, as well as the department’s efforts and role in raising awareness among citizens through the World Vein Week activities, which are of great importance. Many people between the ages of 18 and 70 suffer from venous diseases, whether superficial or deep veins, in the form of chronic venous insufficiency in the legs or deep vein thrombosis, which can lead to serious complications in the short or long term. The prevalence of this disease in society ranges between 17 and 20%, emphasizing the importance of raising venous disease awareness among citizens.

Dr. Othman, Acting President of the University, welcomed the prominent guests, including a delegation of doctors from Aswan University Hospital. He praised the role of the university in general, and the role of the Faculty of Medicine in particular, in raising the ranking of Aswan University in international rankings (Aswan University is among the top 400 universities worldwide) for the faculty’s efforts in holding scientific conferences and publishing scientific research, and that the university always supports these activities and scientific conferences to spread awareness and keep up with everything new in the field of medical sciences.
