Under the patronage of Prof. Ayman Mahmoud Othman, President of Aswan University, the Faculty of Medicine at Aswan University organized the 4th Scientific Day of the Department of Ophthalmology, in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine at Tanta University. The event was held on Friday, March 18, 2022, at the Pyramisa Isis Hotel.
The event was attended by Prof. Mohamed Zaki El-Dashoury, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Aswan University Hospitals; Professor Mohamed Mostafa Hussein, Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research; Professor Mostafa Adam El-Tiri, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs; and Dr. Ashraf Maabad, Executive Director of Aswan University Hospitals.
The event was supervised by Prof. Ahmed Fathy Gabr, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, and was attended by a distinguished group of ophthalmology professors from various Egyptian universities.
Prof.El-Dashoury emphasized the Faculty’s commitment to organizing scientific and medical conferences and encouraging faculty members, teaching assistants, and students to actively participate in such events. He noted that the exchange of expertise contributes to enhancing the research process, developing young doctors’ skills, and improving the quality of healthcare services provided to ophthalmology patients at Aswan University Hospitals. He also highlighted the Faculty’s dedication to advancing the educational system in line with the latest developments in medical education and research.
Dr. Ashraf Maabad stated that organizing scientific conferences and academic events plays a vital role in keeping pace with rapid developments in the medical field, particularly in ophthalmology. He stressed the importance of continuous medical education and knowledge exchange in equipping young doctors with the skills needed to deliver high-quality, safe healthcare services in accordance with the standards of Aswan University Hospitals.
The scientific day commenced with a presentation by Prof. Ahmed Fathy Gabr, who reviewed the history of the department, its academic and research achievements, and recent advancements in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of eye diseases. He also highlighted the department’s role in community service, including its participation in medical convoys that provide examinations and free medication to patients.
Prof. Gabr acknowledged the contributions of Prof. Abdullah Al-Amin, former Head of the Department, in supporting its development and overcoming challenges. He added that the scientific sessions addressed recent advances in corneal transplantation and ongoing efforts to eliminate waiting lists for ophthalmology patients in Aswan. The event concluded with a scientific competition for participating young doctors.
Dr. Mustafa Abu Al-Magd, Director General of Preventive Medicine at Aswan Health Directorate, announced the continuation of the door-to-door COVID-19 vaccination campaign, which aims to reach citizens across all regions, including remote villages and hamlets.
He stated that the Ministry of Health and Population approved extending the campaign by two days, until March 17 instead of March 15. The campaign targeted all citizens aged 12 and above, without the need for prior online registration or waiting for appointment messages.
Vaccination services were provided daily from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM through 680 fixed and mobile teams deployed across health units, hospitals, NGOs, youth centers, and other public gathering locations.
It is worth noting that the Preventive Medicine Department successfully vaccinated 100,867 citizens during the campaign, which ran from March 6 to March 17 under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and Population.
